But Vonnie and Mike grew closer and closer as they faced the battles together. Though ending in Vonnie's death, both Vonnie and Mike felt that their two year battle with cancer was the best two years of their marriage as they grew more deeply in love. It was the time when nothing else mattered in their relationship except facing each problem, decision and setback, as they drew together closer and closer. Old hurts that are below the surface in every marriage literally melted away as they faced cancer.

The many invaluable life lessons learned about their personal relationship as husband and wife, and their relationship with God, are clearly expressed. Many miracles occurred throughout this story, but the most special ones are revealed in the last few chapters. Those miracles showed God's very personal love in ways that could not have been imagined. They were very personal to Vonnie and Mike, and in such minute detail that it was clear to them that God knew them personally and loved them.
This book will touch the reader very deeply to the heart.
Mike included a list of things in the appendix of the book that summarizes the lessons learned about dealing with breast cancer. It could be a help to someone who is facing breast cancer.
The value of friends and family cannot be understated. The Snyders learned that all the investment they made in others came back many times during their trials. The prayers of many carried them and their large family through difficult times. The meals, calls, emails, cards and monetary help that came in was very appreciated and provided much comfort.
Several spiritual issues are dealt with in this book. Why didn't God heal Vonnie after so many prayers of faith? We don't know. But her battle with cancer and her death brought about changes in many peoples' lives that would not have occurred otherwise. Much good has come out of the whole ordeal. It became very clear that God's plan for our lives is much more important than our plans are.

While there are many books about death and dying and about caregiving, precious few if any are written by and from the male perspective. Mike's love and compassion for his wife really shines in this book. This book is a great story of faith, character, and forgiveness. Sooner or later we will all be touched by cancer and reading this book will give you a great deal of insight.
Mike's words will strike a chord in your heart. He is able to put all the pain and sorrow as well as the AHA moments that their battle through cancer and his recovery after her death brought to him. As his sister, living over an hour away, I was aware of what was happening. But until I read this book, I just did not realize the magnitude of their experiences. The strength of Mike's faith and fortitude led him and his six children through this time together.
